Andar Bahar Rules, Odds and Tips for Beginners

Andar Bahar and Teen Patti tables in the Teen Patti Master lobby

Andar Bahar ("inside, outside") is one of India's simplest card games. You only make one decision per round: which side the matching card will land on. It's popular in apps like Teen Patti Master because a round takes seconds.

How a round works

  1. The joker card. The dealer turns one card face up in the middle. This is the joker (also called the game card).
  2. Place your bet. You bet on Andar (left) or Bahar (right).
  3. The deal. The dealer deals cards one at a time, alternating between Andar and Bahar.
  4. The result. The round ends as soon as a card with the same rank as the joker appears. The side that receives it wins.

For example, if the joker is the 7♦, the first 7 of any suit to appear decides the round.

Andar or Bahar: the real odds

In the most common version, the first card is dealt to the Andar side. The side that gets the first card has a small advantage, roughly a 51.5% to 48.5% split. To balance that, many tables pay Andar slightly less than even money (for example 0.9 to 1) and Bahar even money (1 to 1).

The result is that neither side is a "better bet" once the payouts are taken into account. Check the payout shown on your table.

Side bets

Many app versions add side bets on how many cards are dealt before the match appears (for example 1–5, 6–10, 11–15 and so on). Side bets pay more because they are less likely to win. They also tend to carry a bigger house edge than the main bet.

The pattern myth

You'll often hear advice like "Andar has won five times in a row, so bet Bahar". This is the gambler's fallacy. Every round uses a freshly shuffled deck or a random number generator, so past results have no effect on the next round. No pattern-reading or tracking system changes the odds.

Tips that actually help

  • Know the payout. Check how much Andar and Bahar pay at your table before you bet.
  • Keep bets small and even. Andar Bahar is almost entirely luck, so big or rising bets only increase how much you can lose.
  • Avoid chasing losses. Doubling up after a loss can drain a balance very quickly.
  • Set a time limit. Fast rounds make it easy to play far longer than you intended.
  • Treat side bets as a treat, not a strategy.
